For all the talk of footballers becoming more dominant, there’s an ever-present myth that the best player in the world is simply the best footballer.
But it’s a myth that also has a strong hold on the minds of the footballing world.
In a bid to understand how this may be the case, I’ve looked at a range of statistics to find out which players have the most prolific records in their respective sports.
The numbers below are based on a list of all Premier League players who have played at least 500 matches.
The number is calculated by multiplying the number of games played by the number that player has already made it onto the list.
It then divides that number by the average number of goals a player has scored in their career to get an overall record.
This has proved to be a pretty accurate way of determining who is the best, with the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero topping the list in terms of goals scored.
